Cleatus is an instrument repair system for precisely and accurately installing cleats.

The Cleatus Kit contains:

  • Cleat Placement Tool
  • Viewing Film
  • Spruce Cleats x10
  • Rosewood Cleats x5
  • Mahogany Cleats x5

Cleatus allows you to perfectly install cleats using a viewing film so you can see through the wood. 

When installing cleats, it’s essential for the grain of the cleat to be perpendicular to the grain of the instrument. The cleat should also cover as much of the crack as possible. Cleatus makes this painless.

How it works…

The Cleatus Kit contains precision wood cleats, viewing film, and a placement tool.

The cleats are designed to fit perfectly within the placement tool. This allows for consistent orientation and exact location.

 

The placement tool has a standoff height that keeps the cleat away from the instrument until you’re ready to place it. This keeps glue from being smudged on the inside of the instrument. 

The placement tool creates an impression on the viewing film that moves with the device, once the impression is lined up with the crack, so is the cleat. Your cleat can be placed in the correct direction and location.

Cleatus worked.

I got a friend's D-14 cutaway Martin that passed recently. It had two big cracks in the back which was made from African rosewood. I live in Mojave Desert a hard unforgiving place for acoustic guitars. The magnetic film material at first seemed small, later I realized it had to be not too much bigger than the cleat. Reaching way back into the guitar, it's very hard to place the cleat in the right spot without the magnetic system. You think you're in the right spot and by checking with the magnet and the film on a dry practice run, I was way off. For practical and functional repair for a guitar player, It work really well, the cleats fit nicely into the cleat-holster, and are easy to release onto the repair target. On my guitar, the cracks are stable. The guitar is a keeper because of this.

Another genius product!!

excellent cleats!

I bought the spruce cleats to repair a pretty nasty 6" or so crack in an old Gibson archtop. The crack had been previously "professionally" repaired but opened back up again. I re-glued/clamped the crack and afterwards reinforced it with these cleats, and the guitar now sounds and plays great . Nice quality item, very affordable, and the shipping was very reasonable also. Highly recommended!
